Dr Sthapak was Vice Chancellor of the Swami Vivekanand Technical University, Chhattisgarh, governing more than 50 affiliated engineering colleges in the state. He has served as Principal of several engineering colleges in Madhya Pradesh and retired from the post of Director of Technical Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh. He is a recipient of the Khosla Research award and Lifetime Achievement Award, Chhattisgarh Council of Science of Technology.

He taught Chemistry at the undergraduate level in several colleges in the United States and has several publications in international journals.
